[Japan] PhD Program in Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology

Posted:

Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology (OIST) Graduate University is now accepting applications for admission to the doctoral program for September 2013 intake. We search worldwide for students that develop in a stimulating environment for discovery and innovation. With more than half of the students and teachers outside Japan OIST, OIST provides the highest level of higher education during the integration in an international environment. Some 50 leading laboratories conducting research in the various areas are the center of the OIST college graduate. Based on a solid foundation in basic sciences, promote education that is highly interdisciplinary. The graduate program offers a tutorial courses offering interactive teaching style in preparation for thesis research. Course design is tailored to the needs of each student. From the beginning, students work closely with world-class teachers and researchers in well-equipped laboratories.

[Denmark] PhD Scholarship Phylogeography, Extinctions and Global Climate Change

PhD Scholarship Phylogeography, Extinctions and Global Climate Change
Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship at the Center for Macroecology, Evolution and Climate, Department of Biology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark. The PhD candidate will be enrolled for a 3 year period starting between January 1 and March 1, 2013.

Research area and project description:
This PhD project is part of a new Sapere Aude grant entitled `Species Extinctions Under Climate Change: Re-evaluating Extinction Risk` (EXTINCTIONs) . EXTINCTIONs aims at assessing past and current population dynamics and extinction processes and how can this knowledge about the past help to better predict the future impacts of global change in biological diversity.

A significant aspect of the EXTINCTIONs will involve relating Species Distribution Models, SDMs, and paleoclimate simulations to population genetic/phylogeogra phic data to investigate the relationship between population size and geographic range size under climate change over evolutionary time-scales. The PhD student will contribute to this broader objective by investigating the spatial and temporal dynamics of genetic diversity and population structure for numerous species during the Late Quaternary. The goal of this PhD project will be to integrate phylogeographic inference with methods and theory from other ecological and evolutionary sub-disciplines (including macroecology) to understand population dynamics under historical climate change. Technically, the project will include conducting statistical phylogeographic and population genetic analyses, species distribution modeling, and GIS manipulation of species distribution and climatic data. To achieve this aim the Phd student will help, in collaboration with a bioinformatician, to compile a database of phylogeographic and population genetic data spanning different biomes and taxonomic groups from public databases such as GENBANK, NCBI and EMBL.

[USA] Graduate Research opportunities in Ecohydrology and Biogeochemistry

Graduate Research opportunities in Ecohydrology and Biogeochemistry (Master or PhD)

Department of Earth Sciences, Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)

The Ecohydrology and Biogeochemistry lab at IUPUI seeks two motivated MS or PhD candidates working on ecohydrologic observations (field based studies), modelling and/or water-nitrogen interactions starting in Fall 2013. The essential question is how environmental changes influence water and nutrient cycling in different ecosystems (more information please refer to the group websitemypage.iu.edu/~lxwang/Lixin_Wang/Research.html).

Research experience in one or more of the following areas is preferred:
Biogeochemistry, Ecology, Isotope geochemistry, Soil Science and Environmental Sciences. The knowledge and expertise in stable isotopes (2H, 18O and 15N) is desirable.
Graduate study experience and published scientific results are a plus.
