This prestigious, four-year, PhD-training programme, funded by the Health Research Board of Ireland, aims to train scientists to the highest international standards. The research theme of the programme is cell signalling systems and gene regulation in cancer, with an emphasis of fundamental processes driving the genesis and progression of virtually all cancers. The first year of the programme includes three, laboratory rotation projects and selected courses. In the subsequent three years, each Scholar focuses on a chosen research project, leading to the award of the PhD.

Spin-electronics is an alternative paradigm for information processing in which the state variable is the spin angular momentum of the electronic carriers. The ability to exploit spin in semiconductors has rapidly progressed in recent years, with discovery of exciting new phenomena raising prospects for novel devices having new functionality. Much of the interest in materials like silicon and graphene derives from its robustness and longevity of spin as it is only weakly coupled to other degrees of freedom.
