PhD Studentships in Early Language Acquisiton at University of Manchester

Overview
Max Planck Child Study Centre - University of Manchester: job description
The Max Planck Child Study Centre (MPCSS) invites applications for two fully-funded PhD studentships commencing in September 2011. The studentships provide three-year funding covering a tax-free stipend equating to approximately 16,000 Euros per annum plus generous support for travel and equipment. UK/EU tuition fees will also be covered. The MPCSS, based in the School of Psychological Sciences, is part of the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig. Research is focused upon children`s early language acquisition, carried out through both experimental studies and analysis of naturalistic data.

Post-doctoral position in Plasmonically-enhanced Optoelectronic Devices (PEOD) at The Institute of Photonic Sciences

Overview
ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences is a centre based in Castelldefels (Barcelona), devoted to the research and education of the optical and photonic sciences, at the highest international level.

ICFO is looking for a highly-motivated post-doctoral researcher to lead a project on plasmonically-enhanced optoelectronic devices based on colloidal quantum dots. The ideal researcher should have demonstrated experience in design and fabrication of plasmonic nanostructures, hands-on expertise in advanced nanofabrication techniques (e-beam nanolithography, FIB) and strong background in physics and characterization of plasmonic structures (near-field SOM, SEM etc.). Experience in optoelectronic device characterization will be considered an asset.

PhD position in “Gut Microbiota and Infections” at Max-von-Pettenkofer Insititute

Overview
We are looking for a talented and highly motivated PhD student to join our research group “Microbiota and Infections” at the Max-von-Pettenkofer Insititute, LMU Munich.

The position is available from June 2011 onwards.

The DFG-funded position focuses on the molecular mechanisms of pathogen-microbiota interactions in the inflamed gut. We aim at identifying traits that contribute to the pathogen-competitive phenotype of commensal E. coli using genetic screening approaches in a mouse colitis model.

PhD position at MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology

Overview
Molecular Neurobiology of Circadian Timekeeping. Applications invited from EU & UK nationals for a fully funded 3-year PhD studentship under the supervision of Dr Michael Hastings FRS.

The aim of this project is to investigate the role of Cryptochrome proteins in the circadian timing machinery of mammals. Particular emphasis will be placed on their putative role as magnetoreceptors. Techniques to be applied include real-time bioluminescent and fluorescent imaging of circadian gene expression, cell and brain slice organotypic culture, recombinant protein biochemistry, targetted mutagenesis, virally mediated, optogenetic control of cellular activity, and proteomic analysis of circadian transcriptional complexes.

How do Cryptochrome proteins behave within the cell over the 24 hour circadian cycle, what is their role in transcriptional regulation and how are their functions affected by magnetic fields?

Two Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Optimization for Air Traffic Management at University of Bristol

Overview
You will be the primary researcher on one of two projects developing optimization methods for use in Air Traffic Management (ATM). The first project is “Supervision of Route Optimizers” (SUPEROPT) and will focus on tailoring trajectory optimization to suit human supervision, developing formulations and interfaces that are intuitive to use and interpret. The other project is “Probabilistic Network Based Operations ATM R&D” (ONBOARD) and will investigate how to include uncertainty in large scale models of air traffic flow, leading to robust optimization and control of that flow.

Both of these projects are part of the Long Term and Innovative Research (WP E) package within the Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) programme. SUPEROPT is led and carried out by the University of Bristol alone. ONBOARD is led by GMV and in collaboration with SkySoft-ATM. Both projects will involve collaboration with EUROCONTROL and SESAR.
