Doctoral Programme in Quantitative Economics and Finance at University of Konstanz

Brief Description

The Doctoral Programme in Quantitative Economics and Finance at the Department of Economics of the University of Konstanz, Germany, offers scholarships to applicants with an outstanding Master`s degree or a German "Diplom" in economics, business economics, mathematics or related fields.

The three-year programme gives students a firm background in the newest theoretical concepts and quantitative methods of economics and finance, in order to gain the skills needed to write a doctoral thesis in line with the highest internationally recognised standards. Aside from training in economic theory and econometrics, which provides the tools to undertake research in a wide range of fields, students acquire expertise in the main research fields of the department, e.g. finance, labour economics, public economics and behavioural economics.

[UK] CASE PhD studentship in Mathematics at Warwick University

Posted:

Overview

The four-year studentship provides the opportunity for research, towards a PhD in Mathematics, on the analysis of statistical inference problems in the context of spatial tracking. The research is motivated by the problem of tracking large numbers of moving sources of radio emissions and will be undertaken in collaboration with SELEX Galileo Ltd.

Expressing the tracking problem in the framework of Bayesian statistical inference it is immediately apparent that the resulting optimisation problem will be far from convex. The posterior probability will have many local maxima and the research will pursue complexity reduction by using appropriate filters defining a hierarchy of sub-problems at different scales to enable efficient numerical solution. This research will provide the opportunity for applying developed methods to communication-band data with SELEX-Galileo Ltd.
