Vavilov-Frankel Fellowship 2012 for Developing Countries

Overview
Bioversity International established the Fellowship Fund in 1989 to commemorate Academician Nikolai Ivanovich Vavilov`s and Sir Otto Frankel`s unique contributions to plant science. To date, 37 outstanding young scientists from 24 developing countries have been supported.

This year`s Vavilov-Frankel Fellowships call focuses on the following themes:
  • Gene discovery in crop wild relatives.
  • Use of plant genetic resources for adaptation to progressive climate change.
  • Facilitating better use of genebank materials.
  • Researching neglected and underutilized species for food and nutrition security.
  • Policy research in support of the implementation of the International Treaty for Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture.
  • Applying economics to agrobiodiversity conservation, sustainable use and policy analysis.
  • Farmer, trader and market strategies for adding value to crop diversity.
  • Management of plant diseases through a better understanding of host-pathogen interactions and co-evolution.

Fellowship at the School of Physics & Astronomy University of Edinburgh

Overview
The University of Edinburgh is over 400 years old and is one of the largest in the UK. It is Scotland`s premier research University and graded among the top British Universities in the recent national Research Assessment Exercise. You will carry out experimental work aimed at understanding the behaviour and properties of elements and simple materials under extreme conditions, in particular at very high pressures and a wide temperature range. You will be based in CSEC, which is adjacent to the School of Physics, and have access to the in-house optical and x-ray facilities as well as to Diamond and ISIS at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and ESRF and ILL in Grenoble.

Working principally with Dr Gregoryanz, you will participate in a programme to overcome these challenges and to make a detailed investigation of these systems at pressures well beyond 1 MBar. You will develop advanced diamond anvils using modern technologies in conjunction with improved diamond anvil cell preparation techniques to compress samples to these very high pressures and to carry out measurements of optical properties.
