PhD Studentship in Statistics at Maastricht University

Overview
This research project, funded by a grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), is about efficient design of intervention studies in psychology and health sciences. Such studies concern the effects of behavioral treatments, such as smoking prevention in primary school or a therapy for depression. The studies often have a nested design (patients in health centers, pupils in schools, employees in companies) with repeated outcome measurements. Sometimes they additionally have a factorial design to study the combined effects of two treatments.

This project is about optimal and robust design of such studies, in particular about the best sample size at each level (organisation, person, repeated measure), under cost and power constraints. Part of the project is about efficiency gains by two-stage and multi-stage design, where interim analysis after part of the data have been obtained, determines whether the study should be continued or stopped.

Research Fellowship in College of Arts and Social Sciences at University of Aberdeen

Overview
Candidates who have extensive experience of political science/international relations research methods can apply for this scholarship

This post, funded by a major five-year grant from the European Research Council (ERC), involves the expanding role of the European Uni0n (EU) in conflict resolution and crisis management operations, particularly involving the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP).

The project is led by Professor Michael E Smith and funding has been provided for five one-year postdoctoral positions in this research area between 2008 and 2013. This is an exceptional opportunity for a recent PhD graduate to focus exclusively on research for a full year in hopes of contributing to frontier research in EU politics/international security, while also developing your own publication record.
