In many scientific areas one increasingly makes use of images where each pixel holds a matrix or tensor value. This project addresses the development of a solid mathematical and algorithmic framework for connectivity-based morphological filtering and visualization of tensor images. The goal is to extend (hyper)connected, adaptive and multiscale morphological filters to tensor images. Tensor images contain a wealth of information which allows adaptive directional steering of morphological image operators.

Overview
The research group Systems and Control in the department of Information Technology of Uppsala University (Sweden) (http://www.it.uu.se/research/syscon) invites applications for a Ph.D. studentship. The successful applicant will work in the context of the ERC project on control engineering and modeling for biomedical systems. Especially motivated students with a strong background in engineering, computer science, applied mathematics or alike are encouraged to apply. This research will be conducted under supervision of Alexander Medvedev and Petre Stoica.

In this Ph.D. project we will explore different approaches to unravel complex interaction networks as observed in dynamical systems of the human body, especially with respect to endocrinology and neurology. As classical modeling tools are often not satisfactory for modeling of biological signals, ample room for improvement and further exploration of either theoretical or applied research remains in this area.

The Foundation IMDEA Energa has been created by the Regional Government of “Comunidad de Madrid” in order to promote R&D activities in energy-related themes, with main emphasis in those topics related to renewable energy and clean energy technologies.

The Scientific Programme of IMDEA Energa, managed by the Foundation, has been outlined with the aim of contributing to the future establishment of a sustainable energy system (www.energy.imdea.org). Thereby, two main objectives are guiding the workprogramme: To carry out R&D activities aimed at fostering the development of renewable energies. To carry out R&D activities aimed at developing clean energy technologies that have none or minimal environmental impact.
